Attention checks

A question with a correct answer that the server checks. What a wrong answer does: retry, continue or end the study. Where Carrier records each attempt.

  1. The question

Select an Attention segment. Set Mode to Survey (question-based).

Add Question adds a question in a collapsed state. Click the question to open it. Then set:

    • The type: single choice, checkboxes, dropdown, text or rating.
    • The title.
    • The choices, one on each line.
    • The Correct Answer.

Pass Criteria sets if all answers must be correct, or a percentage of them. Show feedback on wrong answers tells the participant which answers were wrong.

The server checks the answers. The correct answers never go to the browser of the participant.

    There are two other modes:

    • Liveness: the participant shows their face on camera and does some actions, for example a blink.
    • CAPTCHA: a short perception or reaction task.
One question. Blue is correct. Feedback is on.
  2. On a fail

On Fail sets what a wrong answer does:

    • Allow retry: up to Max Retries.
    • Continue (log only).
    • Terminate session.

The study ends immediately with Terminate, or after the last retry. Then the participant sees the Fail Message.

If you set Redirect URL (optional), Carrier sends the participant to that address immediately. For example, it can send them back to a recruitment platform (see Recruit participants through Prolific). The message shows first only when the study has a debrief.

    One retry, then a message.
  3. What participants see, and what is recorded

Carrier marks a wrong answer. Try again shows the question again.

Carrier records each attempt in the attention-check results of the participant and in the Attention Checks sheet of the export. Each record shows:

    • If the attempt passed.
    • The number of earlier attempts.
    • The answer to each question, next to the correct answer.

The chatroom history also records the attempt. Here the export has two attempts: a fail, then a pass.

Red is wrong. On the retry, Blue passes.
