Your data: what the export holds

The three export formats, the contents of the main sheets (Participants, Responses, Segment Submissions, Chat History), and how to join them on participantId.

  1. Choosing an export

Export Data is on the page of the study in the dashboard. It asks for a format and a data type.

    The formats are:

    • Excel, the default: each part of the data is on a different sheet.
    • JSON: all the data, nested. Each chatroom has its chat history and its segment submissions.
    • CSV: one file. The parts are one below the other, each under a title line. Read it carefully, or use Excel.

Data Type is All Data, or only participants, chatrooms or responses. For a study in testing mode, tick Include test data in export, as in this clip (see Piloting with your lab).

Excel, All Data, test data included.
  2. What each sheet holds

    The main sheets are:

    • Participants: one row for each participant. It has the ID, chamber line, status, outcome, chatrooms, and one var. column for each variable.
    • Responses: one row for each survey answer. It has the question, the answer, the stage and the segment.
    • Segment Submissions: one row for each participant in each interactive segment, for example a vote, a ranking or a feed. The answer is JSON in the data column.
    • Chat History: one row for each message. It has the sender, the sender name, the model for an agent, and the time.

The other sheets are about the chatrooms and their timelines, annotations, processor and mediator actions, attention checks and reports.

In this clip, a page shows the workbook with rows read from the downloaded file.

The sheets of the downloaded workbook, and its Participants sheet.
  3. Joining them

participantId is the key. It is a column in Participants, Responses and Segment Submissions. In Chat History, the messages of a person have it as senderId.

The messages of all agents have agent as their senderId. The agentId column identifies the agent. chatroomId joins the chatroom sheets, Segment Submissions and Chat History.

In this clip, the answer to the harbour question, the vote and the chat message of one participant align on export_p1.

The rows in Excel and CSV do not show if they are test or live data. In JSON, the participant and chatroom records have isTestData. You cannot limit the export to one line or to a date range. Filter the data after the export.
